East Walker River
The East is running at about 152 cfs right now. The fishing down there has been pretty good for most anglers with the better reports saying they’re catching 5 to 15 fish per half day or so, with quite a few reports this week of fish over 20 inches as well. Of course there are other reports that are not as good as that but it seems that if you are on your game and getting good drifts with your nymphs and dries you should be able to get into some nice fish. Caddis nymphs and small midge patterns still seem to be working the best, there has also been some pretty good dry fly evenings this past couple weeks, the fish aren’t coming up every evening but it’s good to be ready if they do. We’ve also had some good reports on streamers lately, mostly in the early morning or later in the evening. The weather has been fairly cool the last couple days so the water temps are still good and you can still not worry about fishing mid-day.
Patterns to try: WD-40, rainbow warrior, top secret midge, radiation baetis, darth baetis, cotton candy, psycho prince, soft hackle, squirmy wormy, san juan worm, zebra midge, red-headed stepchild, silver streak, flashback emerger, zuddler, dead drift crayfish, moal leech, seal bugger, sculpzilla, chubby Chernobyl, stimulator, BWO, blue dun, parachute adams, elk hair caddis, E/C caddis.
Sceirine Ranch
The ranch is still fishing well, lots of nice fish up to around 22 inches being caught down there. They are still eating some stoneflies on the Nevada side, as well as caddis nymphs, small midge patterns and some streamers. We are getting a lot of calls to fish the ranch so if you want to enjoy some private water try to give us a call early so we can get you on the calendar.
Hunewill Pond
The pond was a little tough this past week, for some reason the fish were’nt very active on the surface, possibly because the weather cooled and the bugs weren’t hatching as much as usual. I’d expect it to get better when this storm cycle moves through and the weather warms up a bit.
Bridgeport Reservoir
The Reservoir has been excellent this past couple weeks, lots of reports of 5 to 15 fish per angler with lots of 5 to 8 pound fish in the mix. Both the trolling and bait fishing from boats have been very good. The trollers have been using mostly lead core with crawlers, Rapalas, speedy shiners and Thomas Bouyants. Bait anglers are using inflated crawlers, pinched crawlers, mice tails and power bait. The best areas lately have been off of Rainbow Point and out in front of the marina near the East Walker channel. We haven’t had much good news from shore anglers, they’re catching a few fish but the shore action is fairly slow. Not too much news from fly anglers either though we did get one report from a couple fly anglers who did well stillwater nymphing off of Rainbow Point in about5 feet of water. As the weather warms up fish will likely start moving further up into Buckeye Bay and the fly fishing should get good.
Kirman Lake
Only had a couple reports from Kirman this week, both anglers we spoke with were unsuccessful, they also reported not seeing more than a fish or two all day rising. Hopefully we’ll have some better news to report at some point.
Twin Lakes
The Twins have been kicking out lots of nice fish this past couple weeks, trolling has been good as well as bait fishing. There has been quite a few nice rainbows in the 3 to 7 pound range as well as some good browns from 3 to 5 pounds being caught. There are lots of anglers releasing these nice browns so they can keep growing which is really great to see. Trollers are having success with Thomas Bouyants, Rapalas and Kastmasters, bait anglers are using inflated crawlers, mice tails and pinched crawlers. We haven’t talked to any fly anglers lately but you should be able to do well with wooly buggers, seal buggers and matukas with soft hackle or zug bug droppers.
West Walker River
Still not much news from the West, the water is still a little high and off color. When the snow melt slows down the fishing up there should start to get really good!
Virginia Lakes
Lots of good reports from the Virginias, not too many big fish but lots of native brookies and holdover rainbows are being caught. Thomas Bouyants, Panther Martins, Kastmasters and mini jigs are all doing well for the lure anglers, bait anglers are using power bait, pinched crawlers and mice tails. Fly anglers can go with seal buggers, Twin Lakes specials, matukas and leech patterns.
Random Information
There are lots of businesses opening up in the Bridgeport area now, the privately owned campgrounds are almost all opened up now as well. The USFS campgrounds haven’t opened yet, we’ve been hearing rumors about them possibly opening on June 12 but this is unconfirmed. Hopefully we’ll have some concrete news about this soon for you. Ken’s is open 7 days a week now, there are motels, restaurants and stores open in the area as well to take care of all your needs while you’re in the area. It’s time to start enjoying the summer! Stay safe and healthy and come get your fish on!!
